Ed. Note: "Current" means whenever I think to update it -- I usually try before the weekend. But I'm lazy and you want to know what it's like right now, not later when I get around to it. So here, look out my window for yourself. The image you see above was taken the instant you loaded this page. Can't get much more current than that.*

March 4, 2010

Looks like an early spring thaw! Rivers and creeks are opening up and flowing water as the temperatures sneak above freezing each day. Secondary roads are bare to the pavement in many places. Still lots of white stuff on the ground, but there is the odd patch of grass peeking out on southern facing slopes and some early flowers are starting to sprout through the snow.

The lakes have not had time to thaw yet, but be very cautious around the mouths of creeks and any areas known to have thin ice due to springs.

Everyone enjoy the Olympics? It was an outstanding and record-setting performance by our Canadian athletes. Come on up to the cottage this weekend and you can see our future stars developing. The Ontario Winter Games start this weekend throughout Muskoka. You can review the schedule at http://www.2010ontariowintergames.ca/eventcalendar/index.html

Investigate local ice conditions because not all areas of a given lake are frozen to the same depth. For example, it is well known that Waseosa in the area of East Waseosa Lake Road is prone to thin ice and open water due to the flow from subsurface springs.  We recommend consulting our convenient ice thickness safety guide at http://www.lwra.net/ice_safety

In keeping with the theme of providing up-to-the-minute (sort of) information, we have a feed  showing current gas prices in Huntsville. There's a link direct to that page in the menu to your left.
