Bill 5, Bill of Rights for Pupils with Diabetes, 2010 recently passed second reading in the Ontario Legislature and is awaiting review by the Standing Committee on Social Policy. Bill 5 addresses many important issues related to the inconsistent care of kids with diabetes in Ontario schools.
Kids with diabetes have a right to be full participants in all aspects of school life. School staff should possess basic knowledge about diabetes and, at the very least, be able to recognize and respond to low and high blood sugar.
The Canadian Diabetes Association is asking the Government of Ontario to make Bill 5 a priority for the Social Policy Committee to allow for a comprehensive and timely review. For more details on Bill 5, please visit:
